Mary Jane Monday ~ Where Science Meets Magick

  • Thi-Anna Hunter, PhD

My husband and I met back in 2004 while attending culinary school. Most nights after class, instead of rushing home, we’d end up sitting in the parking lot until two or three in the morning - because neither of us wanted the conversation to end.

Those hours were sacred in their own quiet way. We discussed our dreams, our fears, and our visions for the future. We weren’t just getting to know each other - we were meeting on a Soul level, long before we had language for what that meant.

During one of those late-night talks, cannabis came up.

At eighteen, my experience with marijuana was almost entirely shaped by fear-based narratives. Like many of us raised in that era, I’d been taught it was a “gateway drug” - something for hippies, rebels, and losers. (No judgment… just deeply inherited programming doing what it does)

Justin, the ever-gentle trickster, nodded along and then went home and smoked anyway. 😅 Sometimes he would smoke with our culinary school friends; other times, he smoked alone.

What I didn’t know then - what most of us weren’t taught - is that cannabis was never the problem. Ignorance was.

Where Science Meets Magick

The human body has an extensive regulatory network called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Its primary role in the body is homeostasis (balance). It helps regulate mood, sleep, appetite, digestion, immune response, pain, inflammation, and the nervous system itself.

In other words, your body is already designed to work with cannabinoids.

Cannabis doesn’t override the body, and it doesn’t hijack the system; it supports a system that already exists.

That’s why cannabis has been used medicinally for thousands of years across cultures – long before fear-based narratives took root. When approached consciously and respectfully, cannabis doesn’t disconnect us from life….it often brings us back into the body, back into presence, and back into listening to our body’s own native healing.

Years later, when my own beliefs softened, and my body began asking for gentler medicine, I met cannabis again – not as a stereotype, but as a teacher.

If you’re curious to explore the endocannabinoid system, conscious cannabis use, and the bridge between science and Spirit more deeply, I share that journey in my book: Sacred Fire: The Sol Alchemist’s Guide to Cannabis and Conscious Creation (available on Amazon). https://a.co/d/5hKZbFq

True Love That Lasts Across Lifetimes

Turns out, love – like cannabis – isn’t what we were warned about. It’s what happens when fear loosens its grip and the truth is allowed to breathe.

More than 20 years later, I’m sitting here with the love of my life – the same Soul I met in that dimly lit culinary school parking lot all those years ago. The same one I swore I’d never date if he smoked pot. 😌

Yet here we are.

We both use cannabis consciously now – not to escape life, but to enter it more fully. To slow down and enjoy being human. To listen to our body’s own healing and soften our nervous systems. We use it to deepen our conversations that still stretch into the early hours of the morning, just like we did back in our culinary school days.

Next month, we celebrate 16 years of marriage. Sixteen beautiful years of growing up together, of shedding old beliefs, and learning that love – real love – evolves as consciousness does.

Cannabis didn’t take anything from us. It supported our regulation, our presence, our intimacy, and our ability to meet one another with gentleness after long days of being human.

What changed wasn’t the plant – it was us.

Marijuana once felt like a threat, but then it became my teacher. What I once carried fear around became my tool for balance. What I once judged, I now understand.

If there is one thing this journey has taught me, it is this: Growth doesn’t always look like adding something new. Sometimes it's unlearning what we were told to fear.

Here’s to conscious love.

Conscious medicine.

And a marriage still rooted in late-night conversations, curiosity, and choosing each other – again and again!

With love, laughter, and a smidge of magick,

~ Thi
