Wellness Wednesday ~ Recognizing True Love in the Body

  • Thi-Anna Hunter, PhD

(A birthday blessing for the love of my life)

We’re taught to look for love in roles.

A parent.

A partner.

A title we can point to and say, "There it is."

But true love doesn’t always arrive wearing the costume we expect.

  • Sometimes, it comes as a friend who can sit with you in silence.

  • Sometimes, as a teacher who sees you without trying to shape you.

  • Sometimes, as a moment in your own body when the breath finally slows, and you realize – I am safe right now in this moment.

  • Sometimes, it comes as a person who stays long enough for your nervous system to learn a new language.

Today, as the man I love turns forty, I find myself reflecting less on years and more on what his presence has taught my body about love.

True love is not defined by who someone is to you. It’s defined by what happens inside you when you’re with them.

From a wellness perspective, love is not just chemistry; it’s regulation. It’s the nervous system recognizing safety without being convinced.

You know you are in the presence of true love when:

  • Your shoulders drop without effort

  • Your breath deepens instead of shortens

  • Your body doesn’t brace for impact or performance

  • You’re allowed to be quiet without being abandoned

This is wellness. Not the absence of pain, but the presence of safety.

True love does not demand your depletion. It does not require you to shrink, hustle, or prove your worth. It invites your body back into itself.

Loving Justin has taught me this – not through grand gestures, but through the slow intimacy of learning each other’s rhythms. Through mornings when anxiety softened because it was met with patience. Through nights when touch was not a demand, but an offering. Through the quiet realization that healing often looks like being allowed to rest without explanation.

That love may reside in a marriage. It may live in a child’s arms, hugging you. Or it may reside in a Soul-Friend, a mentor, a lover, a chosen family member, or even a moment of deep communion with yourself.

Wellness and love meet at the same place – attunement.

Attunement is the art of being in harmony with another (or yourself) without dominance, without rushing, and without needing a reason.

This is why love heals without trying to. When the body feels seen, it reorganizes itself naturally. Your digestion softens, your breath lengthens, and the heart stops guarding every door.

As we cross the threshold years – like forty – we are invited to refine our understanding of love. Not as something that proves itself through endurance, but as something that allows us to rest.

Today, my birthday wish for my love is simple and sacred:

May this next decade be gentler on your nervous system.

May your body feel cherished instead of pushed.

May your breath come easier.

May your pleasure be welcomed without guilt.

And may you continue to learn day by day, that you are safe to soften.

True love feels like finding yourself, somewhere between the inhale and exhale. It whispers, you don’t have to brace; you can be here and be safe.

This is the love that supports wellness – not because it fixes us, but because it doesn’t require us to be anything other than present, in this moment.

Happy 40th birthday to the love of my life, Justin. You are loved in a way that lets the Soul breathe.

A Small Closing Ritual: Recognizing Love as Wellness

Tonight, pause for just a moment.

Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. Take three slow breaths, letting the exhale be longer than the inhale (inhale for a count of 3 and exhale for a count of 6).

Then ask gently: “Where in my life does my body soften? Who or what allows me to breathe more deeply?

You don’t need to label it, you don’t need to justify it; just notice.

That is where love lives. That is where wellness begins.

With unconditional love and birthday magick,

~ Thi
